Z2B EXERCISE: TEST YOUR PLAN

Before every mission my fellow Marines and I would rehearse our strategy so we could work out the kinks—as you’ll be making many split decisions and proceeding with a certain amount of uncertainty, you don’t want to have to work out the plan on the battlefield, in the office, or on the ball field. The Marines call this repetitive skills training, which I’ve described with many examples already (remember my flight school experience?). You can do this, too. Look, if effective decision making and successful execution of plans depend on experience, you’re going to have to get some. Doing dry runs is one way to get experience. Practice might not always make perfect, but it can increase your comfort level when you’re ready to suit up and go.

1. Test your plan. Ask a wingman or BTB to help you. Choose a day when you are well rested and have enough time to run through everything on your list thoroughly. Say you’re planning on giving a presentation to a group of potential investors. Make sure you give yourself triple the amount of time you need so you can revise and run through it a second or third time. So if it’s a thirty-minute presentation, schedule at least ninety minutes for the dry run.

2. Get yourself in the groove. Dress the part and have all your props and handouts ready. That way you can tell whether that shirt you were thinking of wearing will be uncomfortable when you’re standing and walking around a room.

3. Record yourself if possible. Listen to the recording later and tweak it or make improvements as needed.

4. Revise accordingly. Ask your wingman or BTB to make note of potential problems and the best moments—without interrupting you. Afterward, discuss what worked and what didn’t.
